Fuel up at mountain-top restaurant

This historic stone building was built in 1926.

If you visit Caesars Head State Park this fall, be sure to stop at The Mountain House Restaurant next door to the state park’s Visitor Information Center.

Not only is this cool little roadside eatery the “highest’ restaurant in South Carolina, it’s the only one within several miles of Caesars Head.

The historic stone building, built in 1926, originally served as the Caesars Head post office. Over the years it has undergone several transformations from newsstand to soda and ice cream shop to Esso gas station. For the last 25 years, it has been known as The Mountain House at Caesars Head.

Open seasonally, the restaurant currently serves lunch Tuesday through Sunday and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Seating is available inside the covered porch or on benches just outside the front door.

I stopped by for an ice cream cone during a recent visit to the Upcountry. After hiking five hours in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, I was happy to sit for a spell and enjoy the cool mountain air atop the 3,100-foot high peak.

If you plan to make it out to The Mountain House for dinner, it’s best to call and make reservations. The number is (864) 836-7330.
