The rock climbing wall at the Glendale Outdoor Leadership School features 1,000 square feet of climbing space with nine top-roped routes.
Ready to get off the couch and into a new recreational sport? Check out the Glendale Outdoor Leadership School (GOLS), a one-stop learning center for some of today’s most popular outdoor activities.
Located just east of Spartanburg, Glendale sits on a ridge above the shoals of the Pacolet River’s Lawson’s Fork, providing a great venue to learn how to kayak and fish. For mountain biking, adventure climbing and hiking, there’s the nearby Croft State Natural Area.
A full schedule of classes is offered throughout the year for participants of all ages and skill levels.
Many of the educational programs take place at the school, formerly the historic Glendale United Methodist Church. The restored building serves as GOLS’ activity center and includes a 20-foot rock climbing wall featuring 1,000 square feet of climbing space with nine top-roped routes, ramped and inverted walls, crack climbing and bouldering areas.
A daily climbing pass is $6 with an additional $2 for a harness. All safety equipment and a belayer are provided. The facility is currently open to the public Fridays and Saturdays.
A new Low Challenge Course, used primarily for team building, was recently opened on the campus. Designed to test the communication and problem-solving skills of groups, it features six different elements.
Later this summer, the school will open a pump track set on a quarter-acre of the property. A loop with a series of rollers and berms, it can be ridden continually without pedaling by “pumping” the bike through the roller sections. These specialty tracks are used to build biking skills and techniques such as balance, cornering and stamina. And they’re also a load of fun to ride!
“Our mission is to get people living an active lifestyle,” said GOLS Director Rebecca Mullen. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 2 or 82, participating in outdoor recreation is a great way to stay fit and improve the quality of your life.”
