This science center contains the largest planetarium in South Carolina and the seventh-largest telescope in the nation. Part of The School District of Greenville County.

Because Roper Mountain Science Center is a facility of the School District of Greenville County, the primary program participants are that county's school children.

Public programs at the center are limited to Friday "Starry Nights" programs and the Second Saturday public day. In addition, the nature trails, arboretum, and butterfly garden are available to the public any time the main gate is open.

The entire science center is open to the public on the second saturday of each month. This includes: Discovery Room and Lab, Sea Life Room, Rainforest Room, Living History Farm, Daniel Observatory, Health Education Center, Auditorium, and the Planetarium.

The planetarium and observatory are open to the public every Friday night from 7:30 PM until 10:00 PM. Planetarium shows are at 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM.
